Open rhinoplasty

The Procedure
Rhinoplasty surgery is done under anesthesia, either general or intravenous. Your surgeon will recommend the right anesthesia for you and will explain why. After accessing the cartilage, tissue, and bone structure of the nose, the surgeon will work meticulously to enhance the underlying framework to create a well-proportioned, symmetrical nose.
Rhinoplasty can be done either in an open or in a closed procedure. In an open procedure, the incision is made across the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. In the closed procedure, the stitches are hidden inside the nose. Because every patient is different, our plastic surgeons customize each rhinoplasty procedure to meet the individual needs and desires of each patient.

At the end of the nose reshaping procedure, the surgeon will use a splint, internal tubes, or packing inside your nose. A splint will be placed outside your nose to provide support while it heals. There will be medications to take, and directions for taking care of the surgical area. Before you leave, you will be given appointment dates for follow-up visits to remove packing and stitches.
It could take a few months for the swelling to go down, and up to a year or more for the new shape to become completely refined. The effects are permanent, but cartilage can continue to reshape or move, causing the nose to change shape in the future.
