Functional vs. Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

There are two main types of rhinoplasty procedures: cosmetic and functional. In many cases, rhinoplasty can be both cosmetic and functional.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is done to specifically address the outward appearance of the nose. The proportions of various aspects of the nose like the bridge, tip, and nostrils are adjusted. This procedure is chosen by people who are looking to give their noses a more natural and balanced appearance.

Functional rhinoplasty is done to address problems with nasal functioning or breathing. Structures obstructing airflow through the nasal passages are altered to restore proper airflow. Septoplasty, a popular type of functional rhinoplasty, is used to correct the nasal septum (the internal structure dividing the nose into two halves). Because functional rhinoplasty is medically necessary, its cost is typically covered by health insurance providers.

Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

There are two main surgical approaches for rhinoplasty: open and closed.

Open rhinoplasty is performed from outside the nose through a small incision across the columella (the external skin between the nostrils). The skin of the nose is then lifted. This technique is often utilized in cases requiring more access and increased visibility of the treatment area. It allows the surgeon to gain access to the complete nasal structure, including the nasal tip. It is usually done when significant reshaping of the nose is required.

Closed rhinoplasty involves creating small incisions within the nostrils. It is an appropriate procedure for minor reshaping and corrections. It is less invasive, resulting in less healing time and a smaller degree of swelling. There are also no visible post-surgical marks since the incisions are camouflaged inside the nostrils.

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty surgery is done under anesthesia, either general or intravenous. Your surgeon will recommend the right anesthesia for you and will explain why. After accessing the cartilage, tissue, and bone structure of the nose, the surgeon will work meticulously to enhance the underlying framework to create a well-proportioned, symmetrical nose.

Rhinoplasty can be done either in an open or in a closed procedure. In an open procedure, the incision is made across the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. In the closed procedure, the stitches are hidden inside the nose. Because every patient is different, our plastic surgeons customize each rhinoplasty procedure to meet the individual needs and desires of each patient.

The Recovery Process

At the end of the nose reshaping procedure, the surgeon will use a splint, internal tubes, or packing inside your nose. A splint will be placed outside your nose to provide support while it heals. There will be medications to take, and directions for taking care of the surgical area. Before you leave, you will be given appointment dates for follow-up visits to remove packing and stitches.

It could take a few months for the swelling to go down, and up to a year or more for the new shape to become completely refined. The effects are permanent, but cartilage can continue to reshape or move, causing the nose to change shape in the future.
